I Stayed Two Weeks in a 4 Star Beachfront Hotel in the Cook Islands for Free… Here’s How

I spent two weeks in a 4 star beachfront hotel in the Cook Islands without paying for accommodation. No gimmicks, no luck, just one simple approach that most people overlook. Here is exactly how I did it, and how you can too.

When I was booking my round the world trip, I was actually on the phone at work.

The guy on the other end said, “Your next stop is either Fiji or the Cook Islands.”

I propped my phone between my shoulder and ear, quickly Googled “Cook Islands”… and the first images that came up were unreal. White sand, crystal clear water, the kind of place you assume is reserved for honeymooners and people with a much bigger budget than yours.

I am not really one for following the crowd, so I just said, “The Cook Islands please.” Like I was doing something simple, like ordering a takeaway.

Flights booked. Decision made. Once everything was confirmed, I started doing what I always do, working out a minimum budget.

I checked average hostel and hotel prices for every stop on my trip, just to get a rough idea of what I would be spending.

Two places immediately stood out as a problem for the purse: New York… and the Cook Islands.

New York, I figured out. That is a story on another post (I stayed there for free too).
But the Cook Islands? That felt like a different level because there was such limited options.

We are talking honeymoon destinations. Beachfront resorts. Prices that did not exactly align with my “see the world without going broke” plan.

So I did what I knew best. I checked Couchsurfing.

Nothing.

Not a single option.

So instead of giving up, I tried something different.

I went onto TripAdvisor and looked up the top rated hotels on the island. Not budget places. Not hostels.
The nice ones.

I opened the top five in separate tabs and emailed every single one.

I told them I was a solo female traveller visiting on specific dates. I mentioned that I had studied business and had experience editing magazines and websites. Then I got to the point.

I had noticed some of their websites had spelling mistakes and slightly awkward English, and I asked if they would be open to offering me a room in exchange for helping them improve it.

Of course, I made each email sound like they were the only hotel I was reaching out to.

And then I waited.

One of them replied.

And not just a polite “no thank you.”

They said:

“Sure! Let us know when you are arriving at the airport and we will come and pick you up.”

I nearly fell off my chair.

So that is how I ended up staying in a 4 star beachfront hotel in the Cook Islands… for free. The room even had snorkel equipment in the wardrobe for me to use outside. I also got a staff discount in their restaurant.

But weirdly, that is not even the best part.

On my second evening, I decided to head out and explore a bit. The hotel was full of couples on romantic getaways, and there is only so many times you can watch sunsets on your own.

I ended up at a little place called CocoPutts and got chatting to the owner, a guy called Tooks.

Because he arranged the taxi for me to get from the hotel, he asked why I was staying there any not a hostel. I then went into detail on my cunning plan to save a few thousand dollars. What he said next surprised me! He looked at me and said, “If you show me how to use Facebook for my business, I will feed you while you are here. Anything off the menu.”

I mean… what?!

So that is exactly what we did.

By day, I helped the hotel with their website and took a swim in the sea outside my hotel room.
By evening, I would head to CocoPutts, eat incredible food, and teach Tooks how to use Facebook.
And at the weekends, I explored the island with my new friends.

Tooks became like a father figure while I was there. Spending time with him and his team was one of the highlights of the whole trip. He just had that great energy.

What started as a “this place looks nice on Google” decision turned into one of the most surreal, generous, and memorable travel experiences I have ever had. In fact, I went back a second time for a holiday to stay with friends and create even more memories.

All because I simply asked.
